Parcels Live Vol. 2
x Sean Price Williams
Project: Film, Art and Creative Direction
Concept : A Live Club
It all started when band member Jules Crommelin called Carmen from LA, and ended with a live recording behind the closed doors of the notorious nightclub Le Palace in Paris. Jules's vision that day was clear. Impressed by the talent and culture surrounding live music in LA, and inspired by the incomparable Berlin club scene, Jules wanted to find a way to merge these two worlds. The challenge sparked many months of creativity.
This project was a continuation of Carmen’s conception and film direction for Live Vol. 1, and also her boldest, most experimental work with the band in their long history together. Live Vol. 1 aimed to capture Parcels' unique process of re-writing their album live while touring, and Live Vol. 2 honored the same concept.
Working with director of photography Sean Price Williams gave Carmen the freedom she sought to capture on film. It involved trying to quantify the elements that were consistent when live music thrived in a club environment, notably in New York with Studio 54 and in Manchester with the Haçienda, while also finding a way to not interrupt the very real experience of the people she was capturing.
The result was a live recording that produced an hour-long film, an album, and a vinyl.
